Mathematicians Hate AI. They Can’t Quit It
wired ·
Powerful AI systems are transforming mathematics while raising fears about attribution, transparency, and the future role of human researchers. Mathematician Tristan Buckmaster believes OpenAI may have benefited from his work when solving the Navier–Stokes problem, although OpenAI says his prompts could not have influenced the system. Despite these concerns, Buckmaster and other mathematicians continue using AI tools because they are highly effective and increasingly difficult to avoid. Andreas Thom and other researchers have also questioned whether AI systems properly recognize earlier human contributions, while acknowledging that tracing intellectual influence may now be nearly impossible. Some mathematicians worry that relying on AI could make their work vulnerable to unauthorized use and leave those who avoid it at a professional disadvantage. Open letters, declarations, and calls to suspend AI-focused events are seeking rules for attribution, data privacy, and responsible publication. Researchers including Buckmaster and Thom are calling for dialogue and clearer ground rules as AI becomes embedded in mathematical research.
