Matter Machine, a spin-out from the University of Liverpool, has successfully closed an oversubscribed £4 million pre-Series A funding round. The investment was led by IP Group and supported by several key partners including Northern Gritstone and the University of Liverpool Enterprise Fund. This transaction marks the largest investment secured by a newly formed Liverpool spin-out and serves as Northern Gritstone’s first deal under its partnership with the university. The company utilizes artificial intelligence, automated experimentation, and materials chemistry to accelerate the discovery of novel inorganic crystalline materials. This approach aims to significantly reduce the time and cost associated with innovation in sectors such as energy and sustainability. To lead commercialization efforts, Matter Machine has appointed Dr. Gordon Sanghera, co-founder and former CEO of Oxford Nanopore Technologies. Founder Professor Matt Rosseinsky emphasized that combining materials science with AI could transform how new materials are identified. The raised capital will be used to expand technical teams, advance the AI discovery platform, and engage with industry partners.
