Meta executive leaves for OpenAI as the social media giant faces growing scrutiny in India
techcrunch ·
Meta's vice president for India and Southeast Asia, Sandhya Devanathan, is leaving the company to join OpenAI, the ChatGPT maker confirmed. At OpenAI, she will be based in Singapore and report to Asia-Pacific managing director Kiran Mani, overseeing consumer growth, enterprise adoption, partnerships, regulatory engagement, and operations across Southeast Asia and Australia. Devanathan had been with Meta for over a decade, joining in 2016 and holding roles including leading Asia-Pacific gaming before her appointment last June. Her departure comes as Meta faces increased scrutiny in India over online safety and content moderation, including an apology after Instagram restricted a post by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and government concerns about child sexual abuse material. Recently, OpenAI also hired Prabhjeet Singh as its India head, and Singh previously led Uber's India and South Asia business. Following Devanathan's exit, Meta's India managing director Arun Srinivas will report directly to Benjamin Joe, vice president for Asia-Pacific.
