Meta launches an open-weight AI model that runs on Macs
techcrunch ·
Meta has introduced Muse Spark Open, an open-weight AI model described as the most capable of its kind in the United States. Designed specifically to run locally on Apple Macs, the model utilizes 816 billion parameters and supports a context window of one million tokens. It is natively multimodal and optimized for complex coding tasks and agentic workflows, such as debugging Mastodon clients or editing video with DaVinci Resolve. To operate locally, users require significant hardware resources, including at least 1 terabyte of RAM, with performance being optimal on Mac Studios equipped with the M5 Ultra chip. Meta highlights that open-weight models offer distinct advantages like cost efficiency, transparency, and flexibility compared to proprietary alternatives. The company is currently making the model available through various API platforms.
