Meta Offers Steep Discounts for Users Who Share Data to Train New AI Model
aiinsider ·
Meta is offering developers a roughly 95% discount on its new Muse Spark AI model, designed for coding and agentic tasks, in exchange for permission to use their prompts and outputs to train future models. Under the “contributor” pricing tier, input token costs drop from $1.25 to 10 cents per million, while output token costs fall from $4.25 to 20 cents per million compared to standard rates. The initiative follows Meta’s recent difficulties in obtaining training data, including the pause of an internal employee computer-tracking program earlier this year after internal criticism. Meta did not respond to a request for comment on the pricing structure. Developer Mario Zechner, creator of the open-source Pi harness, has noted that access to real coding session data has been central to major advancements in AI coding agents. Princeton professor Arvind Narayanan observed that large companies generally avoid sharing data with model providers, often choosing pricier enterprise plans to protect data privacy, which could make Meta’s discount prompt a reassessment of what data is truly sensitive. The move also reflects broader cost competition among AI labs, coming after recent price adjustments by Anthropic and OpenAI on their newest models.
