Meta Reportedly Developing Camera-Free Smart Glasses Following Privacy Backlash
aiinsider ·
Meta is reportedly working on a camera-free smart glasses model called Luna, according to The Information. The reported device would omit built-in cameras and focus instead on AI interaction. It is said to feature six microphone and a side button that activates Meta’s AI chatbot and its Muse AI consumer agent, allowing hands-free communication without recording capability. The product could debut as soon as next week at Meta Connect, Meta’s annual hardware and developer conference in Menlo Park, though the company has not confirmed the details publicly. The reported move follows backlash and accusations that Meta’s existing camera-equipped glasses function as invasive surveillance devices and normalize covert recording in public spaces. Meta’s camera glasses have still outperformed competitors in the broader wearables market, even as the smart glasses category faces skepticism over cost, usability and privacy. Meta’s Reality Labs division reported substantial ongoing financial losses in its latest earnings disclosure, underscoring the high stakes as Meta tries to broaden the appeal of its AI-integrated wearables beyond privacy-conscious skeptics.
