Meta's Muse agent gives every user a full cloud computer running Ubuntu Linux
decoder ·
Meta has launched its Muse AI agent, providing every user with a free, full-featured cloud computer running Ubuntu Linux. David Singleton, Meta’s VP of Engineering, explains that this virtual machine allows users to install software, compile code, and browse the web just as they would on a physical device. To ensure security, the architecture separates the user's "Runtime Cell" from sensitive system components, while an external "Sentinel" process monitors for threats and protects credentials. The design also includes transparency features, allowing users to view all files and reasoning logs within the environment. Since its release, Muse has become a surprise hit, attracting over 500,000 users in its first week and reaching number one on the Apple App Store. Recent updates at Meta Connect 2026 added real-time video chats, dedicated email addresses, and Mac app control capabilities. This strategic move signals Meta's focus on building products with wide reach rather than solely competing on frontier model performance.
