Meta Says Muse AI Agent Was Heavily Inspired by OpenClaw
aiinsider ·
Meta has acknowledged that its new AI agent, Muse, was heavily inspired by the open-source personal assistant project OpenClaw. This admission follows viral claims from users who noted striking similarities between the two systems, including identical workspace file names and nearly matching SOUL.md personality configurations. Nat Friedman, head of product at Meta Superintelligence Labs, clarified on X that while Muse was built from scratch, it drew strong design inspiration from OpenClaw. Friedman praised OpenClaw creator Peter Steinberger as a genius and revealed that he purchased hundreds of Mac minis for his lab after testing the software in January. He explained that Meta aimed to create a safe, secure, and scalable version of the concept capable of reaching billions of users. The comparison gained traction after AI app co-founder Ansh Nanda posted about the resemblance, with Muse even describing its system files as a match to OpenClaw's. Despite these similarities, Friedman maintained that the code itself was developed independently by Meta’s team. Muse recently achieved the number one spot on the U.S. App Store, further amplifying interest in its origins.
