Microsoft’s Mustafa Suleyman says its AI outperforms doctors on hard cases as he chases ‘medical superintelligence’
techcrunch ·
Microsoft’s AI diagnostic system, MAI-DxO, demonstrated superior performance in a simulation published in Science, correctly diagnosing complex medical cases 83% of the time compared to 36% for generalist physicians. Mustafa Suleyman, Microsoft AI’s CEO, described this achievement as a significant step toward achieving "medical superintelligence." The system utilizes multiple AI agents to question patients, order tests, and debate diagnoses, leveraging models like OpenAI’s GPT-5 and GPT-5.5 to optimize both accuracy and cost. While DxO significantly boosted performance on complex cases, it showed limited additional gains on emergency department scenarios. Microsoft is currently collaborating with Mayo Clinic to develop a dedicated healthcare foundation model and plans to release it next year. Additionally, a new partnership with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center will allow for real-world evaluations of DxO’s clinical reasoning capabilities. Suleyman predicts that medical AI capabilities will improve dramatically within the next 24 to 36 months as production flywheels accelerate development.
