Mistral AI Releases Trillion-Parameter Mistral Large 4 as Europe’s Alternative to US and Chinese Models
aiinsider ·
French AI laboratory Mistral AI has launched Mistral Large 4, a trillion-parameter multimodal model designed to serve as Europe's alternative to American and Chinese competitors. Nicknamed Le Chonk for its massive scale, the model aligns with President Emmanuel Macron’s vision of a distinct third path in artificial intelligence development. Initially, the model is available only through a public guardrail endpoint, with full open weights scheduled for release in three weeks following comprehensive safety testing. Vice President of Science Pierre Stock emphasized that the training process utilized 4,000 Nvidia GPUs, significantly fewer resources than those employed by closed-source rivals or Chinese competitors. The company aims to ensure the open-weight version can be safely audited and used for defense purposes without facilitating malicious attacks. Optimized applications for the model include cybersecurity, finance, and chip design, leveraging support from major backers like ASML and Samsung. While benchmark results are still pending, Mistral hopes to lead the open-weight class and outperform closed models in specific targeted areas.
