Mistral AI Secures €3B in Record European Funding Round, Positioning Itself as Sovereign AI Alternative
aiinsider ·
French AI lab Mistral AI has raised €3 billion (about $3.58 billion) in a Series D round, which it calls the largest equity funding round ever completed by a European technology firm, giving it a post-money valuation above €21 billion (roughly $24.39 billion). Samsung Electronics led the round, with EQT-managed Scaleup Europe Fund and PSG Equity as co-leads, and additional investors including a16z, Nvidia, Salesforce Ventures, Advent, BlackRock, and Luxembourg. Mistral says the funding will go toward expanding compute capacity, infrastructure, and international presence, while pursuing a sovereign AI strategy that includes building 1 GW of European compute capacity by 2030 and letting customers control where AI queries are processed. The company has also started hosting third-party open-weight models, including Chinese systems, positioning itself as a flexible AI infrastructure provider rather than a single chatbot product. French President Emmanuel Macron described the round as reflecting a partnership between France and South Korea to build an alternative path in global AI development. Mistral operates in 20 countries and focuses on helping governments and enterprises adopt AI while keeping control, distinguishing it from labs such as OpenAI and Anthropic; it also continues to partner with Microsoft, having expanded that relationship in July.
