Mistral and Mozilla are bringing open, private and multilingual AI to your web browser

Mistral and Mozilla announced a partnership to bring open, private and multilingual AI to web browsing in a joint post dated September 16, 2026. Under the deal, Mozilla's AI browsing assistant, Firefox Smart Window (beta), is now powered by Mistral models. Smart Window is designed to help users make sense of complex searches, recall information they clicked away from, and source information that matters to them from their browser tabs. Mistral will power Smart Window for users in France and North America, with the United Kingdom and Germany expected to follow later this year. The companies say privacy protections are built in: conversations are not saved on Mozilla's servers by default, and partners such as Mistral agree to zero data retention. Mistral says it fine-tunes its models on regional languages, dialects and cultural context so responses reflect local nuance, and frames the partnership as a way to extend sovereign AI beyond enterprises to everyday consumers. Mozilla CEO Anthony Enzor-DeMeo said a browser should not be a one-way funnel and should let different AI providers compete, while Mistral co-founder and CEO Arthur Mensch said the partnership brings privacy, control and choice to AI-powered browsing.
