techcrunch ·
Boston-based voice intelligence startup Modulate has secured $25 million in new funding led by Future Ventures, with participation from Hyperplane and Lakestar. This investment supports the company's platform that utilizes an array of small models to provide transcription, emotional analysis, deepfake detection, and policy enforcement for regulated industries. Founded in 2017 by MIT alumni Mike Pappas and Carter Huffman, Modulate originally focused on gaming voice modulation before pivoting to voice moderation and AI audio detection. The company currently operates over 100 models categorized into signal extraction and analysis/detection functions, allowing it to understand vocal nuances and identify customer intent without requiring specialized hardware. Modulate serves a diverse client base by helping organizations detect scams, monitor AI agent compliance, and analyze call quality beyond simple sentiment metrics. The startup aims to expand its team by adding ten employees to strengthen model building while enhancing on-premises deployment capabilities for improved privacy.
