A recent Quinnipiac University poll reveals that a majority of Americans desire a slowdown or complete halt in artificial intelligence development until safety standards are verified. Specifically, 47% of respondents want to reduce the pace of AI progress, while 30% advocate for a full stop, with only 5% supporting faster development. The data indicates strong public support for independent safety regulations, with 86% backing these measures even if they impede rapid innovation. Significant concern exists regarding the potential risks of AI, as 73% of adults worry it could threaten humanity's survival and 74% lack trust in AI company leaders. Furthermore, 91% believe guardrails for AI systems are important, and 53% fear AI will do more harm than good in daily life. Despite these reservations, 69% still consider keeping pace with China in AI technology to be important. However, local opposition remains high, with 72% opposing the construction of AI data centers in their own communities. These findings suggest a clear public demand for robust safeguards rather than reliance on corporate self-regulation.
