Musk’s faster path to more gas turbines comes with pollution problem
techcrunch ·
Elon Musk confirmed that SpaceX is building a foundry in Bastrop, Texas, to produce gas turbine blades and vanes in-house. He claims this could accelerate natural gas turbine availability by up to 18 months, addressing a bottleneck in AI data center power supply. The casting process is highly challenging, as blades must be grown as single crystals, and only four companies globally can do it at scale. However, faster deployment of gas turbines raises environmental concerns, including lawsuits and research linking emissions to health issues. For example, in Memphis, the NAACP has accused SpaceXAI of operating turbines without proper permits, and a Virginia study estimated additional premature deaths from turbine emissions. This highlights the trade-off between meeting AI power demands and public health impacts.
