New York Times and Other Publishers Sue Brave Over Alleged Scraping for AI Companies
aiinsider ·
The New York Times has filed a lawsuit against Brave, alleging that the privacy-focused browser company scraped copyrighted content and supplied it to major AI firms such as Anthropic, Perplexity, Mistral, xAI, and Cohere. Alongside the Times, other publishers including the Daily News, the Chicago Tribune, and the Orlando Sentinel initiated similar legal actions in federal court in Manhattan on the same day. The complaint characterizes Brave as both a thief and a distributor of stolen material, accusing the company of building an index of over 30 billion web pages while preventing publishers from blocking its crawler. Additionally, the suit targets Brave's browser feature that circumvents paywalls and its practice of blocking publisher ads while selling its own. The Times is seeking an injunction and damages, noting that it has previously taken legal action against OpenAI and Perplexity for comparable claims. Brave, which has raised approximately $250 million, did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding these serious allegations.
