Nobody Is Saying Why OpenAI and Anthropic Had Outages Today
wired ·
OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI experienced rare simultaneous outages on Thursday, affecting ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok. SpaceX, xAI's parent company, attributed the Grok issues to an outage at its Memphis compute center. OpenAI cited a routing error that made ChatGPT and Codex unavailable for some users, with a fix implemented by mid-morning. Anthropic declined to comment but reported a partial outage involving several Claude models, which was resolved by 9:16 am PT. xAI resolved its outage by 10:05 am PT, apologizing to impacted compute partners. There were unconfirmed reports of a possible Google Gemini outage, but Google did not confirm any incidents. The coinciding outages might suggest a shared third-party service provider, but OpenAI and Anthropic did not indicate one, and major infrastructure companies reported no issues.
