Nvidia Acquires Hugging Face for $12.93B, Pledges to Keep Platform Open

Nvidia has confirmed its $12.93 billion acquisition of Hugging Face. Hugging Face hosts three million models, one million applications, and half a million datasets, serving over 18 million developers. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said the platform will remain open, letting developers choose their preferred models, frameworks, clouds, and compute without needing Nvidia hardware. Founded in 2016, Hugging Face had raised more than $395 million and reached $150 million in annualized revenue last month; it had previously turned down a $500 million offer from Nvidia. Hugging Face CEO Clem Delangue said the deal would provide compute, support, and visibility to scale as an alternative to closed-source AI. Huang has promoted open-weight models for U.S. competitiveness and cybersecurity, noting autonomous defense systems increasingly depend on them, and Nvidia has invested billions in AI labs. Delangue also credited an open Nvidia model with helping Hugging Face defend against a cyberattack involving an unreleased OpenAI model.
