NVIDIA Runs Record Simulation of Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computing at Jülich Supercomputing Centre
nvidia ·
NVIDIA researchers have achieved a record-breaking simulation of fault-tolerant quantum computing using JUPITER, Europe’s first exascale supercomputer located at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre. This 104-qubit simulation is the largest comprehensive model of a fault-tolerant quantum processor to date, offering unprecedented detail on how realistic systems handle noise and errors. The study validates a 'magic state cultivation' approach that requires 90% fewer physical qubits than previous methods, significantly reducing the resources needed for useful quantum applications. By simulating these processes under realistic hardware noise, the research provides actionable insights that help refine designs before physical hardware is built. This capability accelerates progress toward practical quantum solutions in fields such as drug discovery, financial modeling, and materials science. The project utilized NVIDIA GH200 GPUs and was developed initially on an NVIDIA GB200 NVL72 system before scaling to 8,192 GPUs on JUPITER. Executives from both NVIDIA and the Jülich Supercomputing Centre emphasized that this collaboration shortens the path to viable quantum computers by years.
