Nvidia’s AI advantage is moving beyond the GPU
techcrunch ·
Nvidia's competitive edge is shifting from just making GPUs to the broader systems that manage AI data centers. While hyperscalers like Amazon and Google are building their own chips, Nvidia's latest earnings suggest its advantage now extends to orchestration hardware. The company's Vera Rubin architecture pairs its Rubin GPU with a Vera CPU and other specialized units that handle data routing and efficiency. Nvidia's VP of storage technology reported up to a 3x improvement in operations thanks to Vera CPU acceleration, allowing flash storage to be used more fully. Similar logic is seen at OpenAI, whose Jalapeño chip was designed to minimize data movement for efficiency. This represents a new competitive layer where making the whole system work efficiently matters more than just rival GPUs, and Nvidia currently appears to have an early lead.
