Only 13 percent of companies see real returns from AI, Gartner survey finds

A recent Gartner survey reveals that only 13 percent of companies are achieving significant or transformative returns on their artificial intelligence investments. The study, which included responses from 2,002 CIOs and technology leaders, highlights a disconnect between spending and actual business value. While 58 percent of CIOs are pressured to deliver cost savings through AI, half of them anticipate that AI will increase overall operating costs for their technology stacks. Additionally, 44 percent of CEOs struggle to prove financial benefits to stakeholders, indicating a broader challenge in demonstrating ROI. Gartner analyst Alicia Mullery describes this as a gap between the vendor-driven innovation race and the outcome-focused race companies must win. Successful organizations are advised to proactively evaluate projects and prepare for shifts in job roles caused by AI agents. Despite these uncertainties, 75 percent of CEOs still plan to increase their technology spending. Meanwhile, some industry leaders like Bloomberg's Vlad Kliatchko argue it is too early to measure economic payoffs but continue investing based on long-term strategic beliefs.
