Open-weight AI companies are the Valley’s hottest acquisition targets
techcrunch ·
Tech giants are aggressively acquiring open-weight AI companies, with Nvidia reportedly paying $13 billion for Hugging Face, after a $6 billion deal for Poolside and Stripe's over $7 billion purchase of OpenRouter. These acquisitions reflect trends such as Nvidia's desire to reduce reliance on hyperscalers and frontier labs, especially as OpenAI and Google develop their own inference chips. Open-weight models currently see limited adoption, used by only 6% of companies or 2% of software engineers, primarily for high-volume, repetitive inference tasks like customer service. Companies choose them mainly for control and configurability, not cost savings, though rising frontier lab prices could push more adoption. Fireworks, a leading open-weight model router, processes 40 trillion tokens daily and its CEO argues the future is specialized, company-specific models. The article suggests that while OpenAI and Anthropic dominate now, this is not inevitable as tech giants hedge their bets on open technology.
