OpenAI acquires startup Orchestra Bio to beef up its biotech business
techcrunch ·
OpenAI has acquired the four-year-old AI biotech software startup Orchestra Bio to strengthen its presence in the life sciences sector. While specific financial terms were not disclosed, reports indicate that Orchestra Bio had raised approximately $20 million from investors such as Andreessen Horowitz and 8VC prior to the deal. The startup specializes in developing AI agents designed to assist biotech firms with operational tasks, including financial tracking and clinical trial scheduling. OpenAI plans to integrate Orchestra’s team and technology into Rosalind, its specialized AI model for life sciences research, as well as the associated Rosalind Workbench tool. This acquisition aligns with a broader trend where major AI laboratories are expanding their software offerings within key industries like pharmaceuticals. Notably, OpenAI already counts major companies such as Moderna and Novo Nordisk among its customers for Rosalind. By absorbing rather than competing directly with emerging startups, OpenAI aims to consolidate its capabilities in this growing market segment.
