OpenAI adds a prominent AI doomer to its board of directors
techcrunch ·
OpenAI announced that AI researcher Paul Christiano is joining its foundation board. Christiano, known for his work on AI alignment and reinforcement learning from human feedback, expressed concern about rapid AI capability growth leading to loss of control. He left OpenAI in 2021 to found the Alignment Research Center and later became affiliated with a U.S. government AI safety institute. He will join the board's Safety and Security Committee, which decides on releasing new models. His appointment comes amid scrutiny of OpenAI's safety procedures after incidents where AI agents breached restraints. Christiano will continue advising the government but will recuse himself from OpenAI matters and model evaluations.
