OpenAI, Anthropic, Google have been in talks on AI safety for weeks
techcrunch ·
OpenAI’s global policy chief, Chris Lehane, confirmed that the company has been engaged in discussions with rivals Anthropic and Google DeepMind regarding AI safety for several weeks. This revelation follows an essay by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei urging the industry to slow the pace of frontier AI development to avoid catastrophic risks. Prominent leaders including Sam Altman, Demis Hassabis, and Elon Musk have publicly supported this call to action. While such coordination raises potential antitrust concerns, Lehane stated that the firms do not believe a government waiver is necessary. The companies are reportedly working toward establishing an independent standards body to monitor model safety without direct government support. In contrast, President Trump and his advisor David Sacks have dismissed these safety fears as overblown, arguing that regulations would hinder progress against China. OpenAI continues to advocate for legislative measures like the FRONTIER Act to mandate independent verification within top labs.
