OpenAI Confirms Weeks of AI Safety Talks With Anthropic and Google DeepMind
aiinsider ·
OpenAI has confirmed that it has been engaging in weeks-long discussions regarding AI safety with rival companies Anthropic and Google DeepMind. Chris Lehane, OpenAI’s global policy chief, verified this coordination while working with lawmakers in Washington on issues related to catastrophic AI risks. This disclosure follows an essay by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who urged the industry to collectively slow frontier AI development to prevent disastrous outcomes. Prominent figures including Sam Altman, Demis Hassabis, and Elon Musk have expressed support for Amodei’s proposal. OpenAI plans to join Anthropic in integrating third-party evaluators to monitor safety internally, a move intended to address antitrust concerns about suppressing competition. The companies are also reportedly working toward establishing an industry standards body to screen advanced models and coordinate slowdowns if necessary. Despite these collaborative efforts, President Trump has dismissed AI safety concerns, arguing that slowing development would primarily benefit China.
