OpenAI has announced significant enhancements to ChatGPT's plugin ecosystem, introducing app-like interfaces and automation capabilities during its recent Dev Day presentation. The company now allows developers to create dedicated plugin extensions that appear in the ChatGPT sidebar, offering interactive panels for seamless tool integration alongside conversations. These updates include improved file viewers and a new Plugin Creator tool designed to streamline the development process for builders. To assist users, OpenAI has refined the plugin directory with better ranking algorithms and simplified discovery flows, while also granting users granular control over data access permissions. Additionally, ChatGPT Sites can now host these plugins, enabling users to share applications with colleagues who can utilize them with their own connected data. The platform is also adopting the proposed MCP Events specification, which facilitates event-triggered automations within connected applications. These changes aim to transform ChatGPT into a more comprehensive hub for integrating various productivity tools and workflows.
