OpenAI Eyes $30B Pre-IPO Round at $1.4T Valuation
aiinsider ·
OpenAI is currently in discussions with investors to secure at least $30 billion in a pre-IPO funding round that would place the company's valuation at approximately $1.4 trillion. This financial move serves as a bridge ahead of the anticipated public market debut scheduled for next year. The strong investor interest follows a significant surge in OpenAI’s run-rate revenue, which jumped by 70% since July to reach $40 billion in August. Although Anthropic briefly surpassed OpenAI earlier in the year, a strategic refocus on coding capabilities has driven this recent growth. Previously, OpenAI raised $122 billion in March at an $852 billion valuation, which was initially expected to be its final private round before an IPO planned for 2026. However, CEO Sam Altman has since ruled out a listing in 2026 to prioritize AI safety concerns. Altman recently emphasized to Fortune that accepting even a 10% chance of AI causing human extinction by the end of the decade would be unacceptable.
