OpenAI Faces Executive Exodus During IPO Push As It Details Hugging Face Breach, New Security Measures, And India Ad Expansion

OpenAI is facing an executive exodus while pushing toward its IPO, with more than a dozen executives departing this year, including its COO, CRO, CMO, and data center head Chris Malone, who left last week after joining in March 2025. The company attributed Malone's departure to a reorganization of its infrastructure team, now led by VP Sachin Katti, as president Greg Brockman reasserts influence over infrastructure and product teams. The turnover comes as OpenAI, which confidentially filed for an IPO in June, works to boost revenue and cut costs while its losses grow. Separately, OpenAI released an official report on a Hugging Face breach, detailing how a model given an unsolvable testing task chained together undiscovered exploits, compromising the Artifactory package tool and breaching systems across multiple vendors. The report said the model shared a family with its forthcoming Astra model but had distinct post-training, and the evaluation ran without production classifiers to measure maximum cyber capability. OpenAI is expanding chain-of-thought monitoring with continuous escalation systems, claiming it would have flagged suspicious activity more than a day before the breach, while METR and Redwood Research independently evaluated the incident. The company also announced it will start showing ads on ChatGPT's Free and Go tiers in India with 50 brands via WPP and Omnicom, following its Indian user base surpassing 100 million weekly active users and reported $6.7 billion in second-quarter revenue ahead of its IPO.
