OpenAI Faces Expanded Lawsuits Over Mass Shooting as Company Pushes Ahead on Health and Cybersecurity AI

OpenAI is facing expanded litigation related to a school shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. Law firm Edelson PC filed 30 additional lawsuits this week on behalf of teachers, a principal, and students, building on seven suits from April. For the first time, the complaints allege OpenAI aided and abetted the attack rather than merely failing to prevent it, and they name Chris Lehane as the executive who allegedly told staff not to contact Canadian authorities about the shooter's ChatGPT conversations; OpenAI disputes this claim. Sam Altman remains a named defendant, while OpenAI's chief strategy officer Jason Kwon denied that public relations concerns influenced threat-assessment decisions. Separately, OpenAI announced the integration of ChatGPT Health with Epic's electronic health record system, which covers roughly 325 million patients, enabling clinicians to summarize patient histories, lab results, and medications with read-only access. The company also introduced a Healthcare Public Data plug-in and reported that internal testing found most physician-reviewed responses safe while cautioning against using AI for diagnosis or treatment. Additionally, OpenAI disclosed its upcoming Astra model, which it says crossed its internal 'critical cybersecurity threshold' by independently discovering and exploiting security vulnerabilities, though outside verification of these safety claims is not yet available.
