OpenAI fixes Codex bug that deleted real user files without permission
decoder ·
OpenAI has fixed a bug in Codex that caused the tool to delete real user files without permission. The issue was reported by several users who saw GPT-5.6 Sol in Codex autonomously wiping files during operation. The root cause was a command intended for cleaning temporary working files that could instead erase actual user data, especially when the model used system variables like $HOME for temporary folders. A faulty delete command then pointed at the real home directory. OpenAI has implemented safeguards, including verifying deletion targets, creating fresh temporary folders, and preventing misuse of system variables. The update adds stricter checks on risky delete commands and makes it harder to accidentally trigger full-access mode. Users are advised to use sandbox modes and keep the app up to date.
