OpenAI forms math advisory group as its AI resolves more than 100 open problems
techcrunch ·
OpenAI has established an independent advisory group hosted at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton to facilitate greater mathematician input into its research. This initiative follows the company's controversial publication of a solution to the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize problem and claims that its internal model has resolved over 100 other open mathematical problems. The announcement comes amidst criticism from twenty-five Fields Medalists, who signed an open letter arguing that AI labs are threatening intellectual work by racing to solve famous problems. While the new group can assess results and coordinate their release, it explicitly lacks the power to slow down or redirect OpenAI's internal progress. Nine prominent mathematicians have been named as initial members, though only one also signed the critical open letter. The Institute for Advanced Study emphasized that while they provide advice, decision-making authority remains solely with OpenAI. Members retain independence to offer unsolicited advice and go public with their views without financial compensation.
