OpenAI Foundation Commits $50M to AI for City Services as Court Grants Apple Access to OpenAI Hiring Records
aiinsider ·
The OpenAI Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation have launched a $50 million initiative called Cities Deliver to help city governments utilize AI for public services. This program will award grants ranging from $500,000 to $2 million to nonprofit organizations working on public health, economic mobility, environmental resilience, and civic engagement. The initiative builds upon successful pilot projects in Cali, Cape Town, and Rio de Janeiro, with follow-on funding planned to expand their existing AI tools. In a separate legal development, a U.S. judge granted Apple expedited access to OpenAI’s hiring records related to former employees who moved between the two companies. Apple alleges that these individuals stole trade secrets regarding unannounced products and hardware components during their transition to OpenAI. While the court denied some of Apple's broader discovery requests, it allowed access to interview materials and private messages involving specific ex-Apple employees at OpenAI. These developments highlight both OpenAI's expanding role in civic infrastructure and its ongoing intellectual property disputes with major tech competitors.
