OpenAI launches always-on Dots agents to rival Meta's Muse

OpenAI has officially launched 'Dots,' a new suite of always-on AI agents designed to rival Meta's recently released Muse. Introduced at the DevDay 2026 conference, these agents operate on dedicated cloud computers with their own browsers, allowing them to conduct research, analyze data, and write code autonomously around the clock. Users can interact with Dots via ChatGPT, Slack, or Microsoft Teams, where the agents maintain context across channels and act like digital coworkers by taking initiative on tasks such as bug fixes or invoice management. While proactive background work is limited to read-only access, active tasks require user approval based on customizable safety rules, ensuring sensitive actions remain under human control. The launch coincides with the release of the cheaper GPT-6.1 Sol model, whereas the top-tier GPT-6.1 Astra remains delayed due to safety concerns. Access to Dots is currently restricted for Pro subscribers in Europe, though business and enterprise customers have broader availability. OpenAI plans to expand the feature with specialized organizational Dots and integration into Microsoft’s Agent 365 platform.
