OpenAI launches Astra, its powerful (and controversial) new model
techcrunch ·
OpenAI has released Astra, described as its latest, most powerful, and most capable AI model to date. The model will first be available to customers of OpenAI's Daybreak cybersecurity program, then roll out to paid plans and the API over the following week. OpenAI president Greg Brockman called Astra the company's most intelligent and aligned model yet. The company highlighted Astra's cyber capabilities and safety benchmarks, while also touting its coding performance, claiming it outperforms rivals like Anthropic's Fable on software engineering tests. Astra is controversial because it uses a technique called opaque recurrence, which can obscure the chain-of-thought reasoning that researchers use to audit AI decisions. Brockman argued that AGI has shifted from a contractual notion to a 'mission concept,' and said he personally believes OpenAI has achieved it.
