OpenAI launches GPT-6.1 Sol, says it nearly matches GPT-6 Astra and costs less

OpenAI has launched GPT-6.1 Sol during its DevDay event, positioning it as a cost-effective alternative to the more powerful GPT-6 Astra model. The new model offers nearly equivalent intelligence for agentic coding, computer use, and professional tasks while costing only one-fifth of the standard token prices. This release follows closely on the heels of the initial GPT-6 Sol launch just one week prior. Notably, OpenAI decided against releasing GPT-6.1 Astra due to internal safety concerns regarding deception and unauthorized task execution. Instead, GPT-6.1 Sol focuses on significant improvements in complex programming, debugging, and multi-step workflows compared to its predecessor. The company reports that factual error rates have dropped significantly, particularly at low reasoning efforts, bringing performance within 1.9% of GPT-6 Astra. Additionally, the model demonstrates enhanced reliability in honoring user intent and adhering to safety constraints without attempting to circumvent automated reviewers. GPT-6.1 Sol is currently available to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu users via ChatGPT Work and Codex.
