OpenAI rallies 100+ companies to sign open letter warning AI-powered cyberattacks on critical infrastructure are imminent

OpenAI published an open letter on global cyber defense that has been signed by more than 100 companies, including Microsoft, Google, AWS, Anthropic, Cisco, CrowdStrike, Deutsche Telekom, SAP, and Mastercard. The signatories warn that AI-enabled cyberattacks will become more widespread and sophisticated, putting hospitals, water utilities, and other critical infrastructure at particular risk. They say current AI advances are already helping defenders address accumulated security weaknesses and urge organizations to deploy these tools while defenders retain an advantage. The letter calls for cybersecurity to become a C-suite priority, greater government funding and coordination, and affordable security tools from AI companies for underfunded organizations, alongside action on unpatched software and weak authentication. A joint NSA, CISA, and FBI warning reportedly supports these concerns, stating that attackers are already using AI to create exploit scripts targeting industrial control systems in several US sectors.
