OpenAI reopens its $200 Pro plan but cuts API credits in half as it nudges users toward pay-per-use

OpenAI has reinstated its $200 monthly Pro subscription plan for new users while simultaneously reducing the amount of API credits provided per dollar by half. This strategic shift aims to gradually move customers away from heavily subsidized subscriptions toward a pay-per-use pricing model. Despite the reduction in credits, OpenAI claims that subscribers will still achieve more productivity due to the recent release of GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna at lower API prices. The company has also removed the previous five-hour usage cap, allowing subscribers greater flexibility in how they utilize their weekly allotment. Thibault Sottiaux, an employee at OpenAI, explains that this change aligns revenue more closely with the actual value companies derive from AI tools. Over time, API prices are expected to decrease significantly, making on-demand usage economically comparable to subscription benefits. Microsoft has already implemented similar pay-per-use strategies with its Copilot service in certain regions.
