OpenAI's GPT-Image-2 can now generate images without a background
decoder ·
OpenAI is previewing transparent background support for its GPT-Image-2 model through the API, allowing users to generate PNG images without a background. The feature is activated with a "background=transparent" parameter, and OpenAI advises leaving background descriptions out of prompts to avoid unwanted backgrounds. The Cookbook highlights four use cases: product shots for online stores, PowerPoint diagrams, design elements like icons and stickers, and merchandise artwork. According to OpenAI, generating with the alpha channel built in produces better results than conventional background removal, especially for challenging areas such as transparent glass or thin fibers. For charts with exact numbers, the company recommends manually verifying generated values because the model produces raster graphics and does not guarantee pixel-perfect accuracy. Setting up the feature requires Python, the OpenAI and Pillow libraries, and an API key.
