OpenAI’s revenue is reportedly $20 billion less than previously projected
techcrunch ·
OpenAI has reportedly informed investors that its annualized revenue is approximately $20 billion lower than previously estimated figures suggested. While earlier reports indicated the company's revenue was nearing $70 billion, the Financial Times now states that OpenAI projects this figure to be closer to $50 billion. The discrepancy arises because the initial $70 billion estimate was derived from investor attempts to directly compare OpenAI’s performance with Anthropic’s reported run rate. A key difference in calculation methods contributes to this gap, as Anthropic includes sales made by its cloud partners while OpenAI does not. This financial adjustment comes as the company seeks to justify massive investments, including a recent $122 billion funding round. Earlier leaked financials revealed that OpenAI generated about $13 billion in 2025 but incurred significantly higher expenses. Consequently, the company’s anticipated initial public offering has been delayed from this year to early 2027.
