OpenAI's upcoming chat-and-work merger in ChatGPT signals the end of all-you-can-prompt pricing
decoder ·
OpenAI is set to merge its Chat and Work features within ChatGPT, a move that signals the end of unlimited prompt pricing for Plus, Pro, and Business subscribers. Starting in December, these plans will share a single token budget across both ChatGPT and Codex interfaces. Tokens represent the data processed by the model, meaning complex tasks consume the shared allowance more rapidly. While chats using Instant models remain exempt from this budget, heavy usage on lower-tier plans may result in reduced quality or slower responses. OpenAI recently doubled usage limits for higher-priced tiers, likely preparing users for this structural change. This consolidation aims to simplify the platform's complexity, which currently offers numerous modes and model settings that confuse even experienced users. Competitor Anthropic has already implemented a similar integration between Chat and Cowork in Claude.
