OpenAI's advertising business has reached an annualized revenue run rate of $1 billion. The company presents this achievement as evidence of a diversified business model. This milestone comes as OpenAI prepares for a major IPO and faces pressure to justify its $852 billion valuation. The ad unit, which is roughly 200 days old, supplements existing revenue from corporate clients, subscriptions, and usage-based APIs. Ads in ChatGPT began as a test in the US in February and are now available in over 40 countries. A self-serve option is being introduced in India, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. Ads appear for both Go subscribers and free users, are clearly labeled, and are said not to affect ChatGPT's responses. Advertisers also cannot access private conversations.
