OpenRouter's staggering token chart is the AI bubble debate in a single image
decoder ·
OpenRouter, a platform that lets developers connect AI models to their products, has seen weekly token consumption rise by more than 25,000% since January 2025, from 0.5 trillion to 126.2 trillion tokens. The article argues that this dramatic chart reflects inflated token metrics as much as genuine growth in AI adoption or business value. Reasoning models can generate large amounts of internal “thinking” tokens, while inefficient agentic systems may consume huge quantities even when usage increases only modestly. OpenAI’s GPT 5.6 Luna recently led token consumption on OpenRouter, but that may reflect higher token generation per prompt rather than a larger user base. OpenAI’s Astra leads in revenue, while Chinese models including Kimi, GLM, and DeepSeek have increased monthly spending tenfold in 2026 from a much smaller starting point. The chart therefore illustrates why token volume alone is not a reliable measure of AI usage or commercial success.
