Patagonia has what AI data centers want, including no resistance so far

Argentina's Patagonia region is attracting interest as a site for AI data centers because of its cool climate, renewable energy, shale gas, and vast open land. Power producer Pampa Energía plans a facility of up to 500 megawatts in Neuquén province and is seeking investors, with initial contracts anticipated by end of 2026. Polish company Green Capital aims to start with 300 megawatts in Chubut, eventually expanding to 3,000 megawatts. OpenAI announced a project with Sur Energy in October, but the deal is not yet signed. So far there has been no local pushback, unlike in the US, because Argentina still has very few large server farms. However, opposition could emerge as Pampa wants to build near its Loma de la Lata plant, where indigenous Mapuche families have previously clashed with energy companies. Unresolved issues include grid connections, undersea cables, and investment stability after the 2027 presidential election.
