Pay-per-inference for AI agents: How BlockRun and Incarna use Amazon Bedrock AgentCore payments
aws ·
Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Payments enables AI agents to autonomously purchase services like model inference using a managed, secure payment infrastructure. This solution addresses the challenges of high-frequency, low-value transactions by supporting the x402 protocol and enforcing spending limits at the infrastructure layer rather than relying on the model itself. Incarna utilized this capability to integrate with BlockRun, an inference router that charges per request for over 90 models. The integration allows agents to pay for individual API calls using stablecoins on the Base network, with each transaction settled independently and verifiably on-chain. By leveraging Coinbase CDP connectors and built-in governance tools, developers can implement these payments in days instead of months. The system ensures safety through session-based spending caps and cryptographic signing, preventing agents from overspending even if their prompts are manipulated. This architecture supports both exact pricing and dynamic 'up to' ceilings, providing flexibility for various use cases. Ultimately, this approach facilitates sustainable economics for agentic AI by allowing autonomous systems to transact safely and efficiently.
