Pentagon Adds ChatGPT and Grok to Military AI Platform, Bypassing Anthropic
aiinsider ·
The Pentagon has introduced custom defense versions of OpenAI's ChatGPT and xAI's Grok, named ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government, on its secure GenAI.mil portal for roughly 3 million military and civilian personnel. The portal, which previously offered Google's Gemini, has reportedly attracted more than 1.7 million users. Anthropic's Claude was notably excluded after the company declined to grant unrestricted use without safety guardrails, leading the administration to label it a supply-chain risk, a designation Anthropic is contesting in court. ChatGPT Mil is designed for routine unclassified administrative, logistics, and planning tasks, while Grok for Government, built on SpaceX's Starshield satellite network, is intended for broader mission support such as acquisitions research and supply-chain logistics. The department has also made separate AI-related agreements with Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Reflection AI.
