ainews ·
Pony.ai has unveiled its fourth-generation autonomous electric truck, developed in partnership with GAC Commercial Vehicle for logistics fleets. Unveiled at IAA Transportation 2026, this Level 4 heavy rig is built on the T9 battery-electric architecture and will enter mass production later this year. The vehicle features a comprehensive sensor suite including nine lidars, three radars, and thirteen cameras to ensure 360-degree awareness. Significant cost reductions are projected, with hardware expenses down 70 percent and operating costs per ton-kilometre expected to drop by 30 percent. Energy efficiency is enhanced through aerodynamic design and control algorithms that reduce consumption by 10 percent compared to conventional trucks. The system utilizes Pony.ai’s unified 'Virtual Driver' software and includes full hardware redundancy for steering, braking, and computing. Initial operations will focus on long-haul freight, dedicated corridors, and port transport within domestic markets. Following local production, Pony.ai plans to expand into European and Middle Eastern markets over the next two years.
