Presentation Startup Gamma Acquires Design Startup Lica To Launch AI Research Lab

Gamma, an AI presentation startup, has acquired design startup Lica, which is backed by Accel, to create a new design research lab led by Lica's co-founders. Lica was founded in 2023 by Priyaa Kalyanaraman and Purvanshi Mehta and initially built tools for turning screenshots and recordings into presentations and videos before shifting to branded marketing content for e-commerce; it had raised $4 million from investors including Accel and South Park Commons. Kalyanaraman explained that the deal came from a shared vision with Gamma CEO Grant Lee about simplifying visual communication, combining Lica's frontier research with Gamma's distribution to over 100 million users. Lee said the companies aim to explore how presentations and visual communication can evolve beyond current formats, with a focus on interactivity and design research. Mehta added that the new division will personalize AI-generated communication styles for different audiences, allowing tailored and editable outputs. The acquisition follows notable investment and consolidation in AI presentation tools, including Gamma's own $68 million raise at a $2.1 billion valuation and OpenAI's recent acquisition of presentation startup NextSlide.
