Quintessent Raises $40M Series A and Begins Sampling First Product for AI Optical Interconnects

Quintessent, a Santa Barbara-based startup, announced it raised $40 million in an oversubscribed Series A funding round led by Cycle Capital, with participation from new investors such as Goldman Sachs XIG-Industry Ventures, Susquehanna International Group, and Ciena, as well as existing backers. The company also began customer sampling of its first product, a single-chip quantum dot-based DWDM comb laser built on Gallium Arsenide material. This laser is designed to simplify optical connectivity for AI datacenters by generating eight precisely spaced wavelengths from a single laser, potentially reducing data movement power by up to 40 percent. The architecture avoids dependence on the capacity-constrained Indium Phosphide laser supply chain, leveraging a mature GaAs material system integrated on silicon photonics. Co-founder and CEO Alan Liu stated the funding will be used to mature and scale manufacturing of the comb laser and develop additional optical components, such as semiconductor optical amplifiers and an optical engine. The technology was previously demonstrated at OFC 2026 and is now available as an evaluation kit for customers. Cycle Capital's founder highlighted the technology's potential to scale data center performance while reducing energy consumption.
