Reddit's r/opensource bans all AI-related projects, sparking backlash and a rival subreddit

The Reddit community r/opensource has implemented a strict ban on all posts related to artificial intelligence, including projects that use, were built with, or are designed for AI. Moderators announced the new rules, arguing that current AI technology does not align with the values of the open-source community. In addition to the AI restriction, the forum now requires projects to be at least one year old, actively maintained, and have multiple contributors. The moderators also decided to reject non-English posts, citing difficulties in distinguishing between human-written text and AI-generated translations. Critics have condemned these measures as overly broad and vague, noting that even major projects like the Linux kernel contain AI-generated code. While moderators listed minor exceptions such as auto-generated subtitles, the backlash was swift and significant. Consequently, a rival subreddit named r/TrueOpenSource emerged to support AI-inclusive open-source development.
